When I attended this vigil on April 28, 2007, I was given a flyer they
hand out to people who ask about the vigil:
Our intention in gathering is to bear witness to the God of compaaion
and peace in these difficlut times.
There is conflict within all of us. On the one hand, we are
horrified and outraged at the violence in the world. On the
other hand, there is a nagging feeling that more violence will not
satisfy our longing to live in peace. It is this longing
within us, we believe, that is addressed by the call of Jesus to love
our enemies and to pray for those who spitefully use us. Many
of us, as yet, are not able to do as Jesus teaches and practices.
By standing in silent vigil, then, we make a beginning toward
that to which we are called, refusing to take on the role of enemy
against "terrorists", the people of Afghanistan, or against anyone whom
God has created.
Our hope is that by these humble steps we will allow ourselves to feel
more deeply the pain and anguish of lives lost to terror wherever it
occurs in the world; to grieve for a world which finds violence and
killing acceptable, and finally, to practice the things that make for
peace.
Vigil for Peace: a silent vigil, every Friday, 4:30 to 6:00
at the Chelan Post Office. You are welcome to join us for a few minutes or the entire vigil.
On the day I attended, the vigil was not silent. Which was fine with me, since I wanted to talk to this group, anyway!
